Impacts et interactions de la microsporidie Nosema cerenae et d'insecticides neurotoxiques sur la santé de l'abeille domestique, Apis mellifera

Abstract : The honey bee, Apis mellifera, is a pollinator playing a major economic and ecological role. The losses of honeybee colonies observed in the recent decades reflect a more general decline of pollinators. The origin of this decline is believed to be multicausal, implying many stressors able to interact each other. This work focuses on the impact of two stressors frequently found in the honeybee, the microsporidian parasite Nosema ceranae and neurotoxic insecticides (active ingredients or phytopharmaceutical formulations), as well as their interactions. A synergistic effect on bee mortality has been observed with certain combinations. N. ceranae and the insecticides also induced a modulation of enzymatic activities and in the honeybee midgut transcriptome, with genes involved in immunity, detoxification, epithelial and neuronal integrity and cell cycle. The Nosema-insecticide combination specifically induced a modulation of genes of the ubiquitin-proteasome system and oxidative phosphorylation. In addition, a disturbance of the major bacterial species of the intestinal microbiota has been observed in response to these stressors. This work demonstrated interactions between insecticide formulations and between a parasite and two insecticides, and proposes hypotheses on the mode of action of these interactions which remain to be verified at the individual and colony scales.
